Nike Air Rift: AKA "The Cloven Hooves"

I bought these back in May 2015 and had wanted them for ages. The main reason that I didn't invest in them before was because of the Cloven nature of the split toe it's almost impossible to purchase socks to wear with them. Nike used to sell them, but that was a few years ago now and even eBay doesn't seem to stock 'em.

The reason that they're called Air Rift is a tribute to the barefoot running techniques of athletes in the Kenyan Rift Valley. The split toe design is supposed to replicate this.

As I walk a great deal these sneakers have really started to stink. I spray them with deodorant and wash them in the machine after two wears, but they're pretty ripe. I decided to remove the insoles as pictured and use them as a template for cutting out some replacement memory foam ones. They were quite comfy to and from my walk to the post office where I sent off an eBay shoe parcel.

  1. What curious shoes. They put me in mind of Japanese 'tabi' socks.

  2. They are a bit like that. I still have them, but they smell so strongly that I have banished them to the seaside.

  3. They also have a touch of the kick-boxer's foot-protector about them. I'm glad to hear they still have some purpose.

  4. I'd love to try kickboxing, but I'm a speccy nerd with an inability to use contacts.

    1. Ah. I too am a four-eyed dweeb type character. I'm also too weak and retiring to attempt such a thing.
